A hands-on adjustment is worth a thousand words.
Often the simplest way to communicate information about the asana practice is by physically putting the practitioner’s body into the correct position. This bypasses a lot of mental processing that can end up being counterproductive to the learning process.
I have had a knack for hands-on assists from the beginning of my journey as a yoga teacher. As a trained massage therapist and an advanced asana practitioner myself, my intuition for postural alignment and a sensitivity to the practitioner’s experience has helped me develop adjustments that are highly effective and that feel great.
I have refined these adjustments over the last 20 years. Not only have I been experimenting with the best ways to perform assists on students, I have also taught these assists in workshops for two decades. By teaching these adjustments I have learned which of them are universal, which adjustments work for all teachers, not just for my particular body type.
I believe these techniques are the most skillful ways to offer assists to yoga practitioners. My approach is pragmatic, not dogmatic. I care about what works and what feels good, not about repeating adjustments merely because it is the way they have been traditionally taught. In my opinion, many of the adjustments that are used in the Ashtanga tradition need updating. This is another purpose of this video, to offer alternatives to routine and unexamined adjustments.
I hope these videos offer you new opportunities to enhance your yoga teaching, bring new insights into your asana practice and make deeper, long lasting connections with your students.
